4 Common Mistakes to Avoid When Scheduling a Dumpster Rental

The most common mistake people make when renting a dumpster (especially the first time) is renting the wrong size roll-off dumpster. Many homeowners underestimate just how much stuff they have to get rid of. Or they don’t load the dumpster properly, and find they have a bunch of junk that won’t fit in the dumpster. While you can always rent another dumpster, it’s more cost-effective and less stressful to rent the right size to start with.

We recommend sizing up if you’re in doubt. And if you have space left over in a larger roll-off dumpster, you probably have some more items you can clear out.

Mistake #2: Tossing Hazardous Materials into Your Roll-Off Dumpster

This is the second biggest mistake people make. Just because you paid for a dumpster rental doesn’t mean you can throw everything into it. Hazardous materials and prohibited items in your dumpster can cost you. If the rental company empties the dumpster at the landfill and is fined for dumping hazardous materials, they will hold you responsible for the fine.

Pay attention to the list of Restricted Items posted by a dumpster rental company. The list is pretty universal for the industry and includes things such as motor oil, poison, paint cans, asbestos shingles, and more.

Mistake #3: Overfilling Your Dumpster

This goes hand-in-hand with getting the wrong-sized dumpster. When you rent a dumpster, the company will tell you what the weight limit is, and tell you not to fill the dumpster beyond the top of the container. The dumpster rental company cannot haul a dumpster that is overflowing, because debris could fly out during transport, or the dumpster could be overweight.

Avoid fines for either and have a plan to load your dumpster correctly.

Mistake #4: Working with the Wrong Dumpster Rental Company

Before scheduling delivery of your dumpster rental, do your homework. Look for a company that has good reviews. Get recommendations from friends and neighbors. You may need to call for pricing, as the exact cost of your roll-off dumpster rental may depend on transport times, when you need it delivered, and more. Be sure to ask about any additional fees so you know exactly what to expect. Some companies may offer a low-ball price, but then charge delivery fees, pickup fees, or charge extra for a Saturday delivery.
