Some tips to get your kids involved with recycling

Trying to convince kids to do certain things is not always easy, it’s difficult to even make them do some chores, like cleaning their rooms. So, how can we convince them to recycle, how do we tell and explain to them that “going green” is not something only adults have to do?
The first step for this is understanding by yourself what recycling is. You can’t explain something you do not know about, so knowing that the accumulation of waste is something we all have to fight and that this is a global problem is very important. Natural resources are very important. We need to conserve our natural resources and, in order to do that, we recycle. Recycling helps to reduce carbon emissions, which is the main reason why global warming is happening.
Recycling is very important and can have immediate impacts. You may think that nothing is changing when you recycle, because if other people do not do it, why should you bother? Well, a single drop in the ocean may seem like nothing, but the ocean is formed by many single drops, so if any single one of us can do something, the result at the end is something that can change the world. So, how do you pass to the next generation the importance of recycling? We have some tips that might be useful.

1.Make it fun
What is the most important thing to children? Having fun. Make recycling something fun for them, for example, by doing art projects. One great idea is to let them design the recycling containers. By doing this, they will engage with the containers, knowing what each one is used for, and they will give their unique perspective about how they see things. They will feel proud to have their masterpiece exposed so they may even visit the bins with recyclable waste.

2.Make it a game
Everything can be a game for a kid. Why not make this process into one? Usually, containers come in different colors in order to know how to dispose of your trash, so why not make a game using your imagination? You can even give them small prizes to make them feel rewarded. Games always have a reward when you win, so doing something that is good can also be seen as winning.

A little competition between you and your child, or between your kids, if you have more than one can also be a good idea, but make sure that nobody feels like a loser at the end. We all win if we all recycle.

3. Walk the walk
Kids will use you as a role model. You are the one they are constantly watching and learning from. What they will be in the future is on you; you are their mentor. Giving them a positive role model to follow is very important, so always recycle. Once they see that you are always separating garbage from recyclables, they may start to realize how important this is, because you always take your time to do so.

4. Casually educate
Kids do not like lectures. They do not want to listen to you for twenty minutes straight talking about a subject, and they usually just turn their switch off. There are other ways to explain to your kids the importance of recycling. Use images, videos, a real example for them to see and understand what is going on in the world. The impact of the real effects of no recycling will make them think about what they are doing. Seeing how animals suffer from not recycling can change their mind, and little by little, they will start to recycle.

The future of this world is in our children's hands, so, the sooner we begin to show them how important recycling is, the better.
