Dumpster Rental vs Bagster: Which One Is Right for You?

If you’re looking at your cluttered garage, basement, or attic and thinking it’s time to get rid of some junk, we understand. It happens to all of us. Or maybe you’ve got a landscaping project and need to get rid of concrete and plant material.

You don’t have a pickup to haul your stuff to the landfill, and you can’t wait for bulk item pickup. So you’re looking at your options. Do you check out this thing called a Bagster, or do you arrange for a roll-off dumpster rental?

The answer depends on how much stuff you have, how big it is, and how much work you want to do. We’re biased, but we think a 10 cubic yard dumpster rental is the better deal. Let’s take a look at why.

First, the Bagster

You may have seen commercials for The Bagster or seen a display of them at your local big box hardware store. Essentially, the Bagster is a large bag that you fill with your junk, and Waste Management comes to pick it up when you’re ready. But it’s not quite that simple.

Let’s look at some of the specifications of the Bagster and their pricing.

The Bagster Specifications

The Bagster is slightly less than a third of the size of a 10 cubic yard dumpster. It can be a good solution if you have a very small cleanout project, and don’t have anything large.

Measurements: 8’ long x 4’ wide x 2.5’ high

Capacity: 3 cubic yards or 3300 lbs/1.65 tons

Delivery: You must purchase The Bagster at a local retailer or Amazon.

Pickup: You have no time limit for when you have to have the bag ready for pickup. Waste Management says they will pick up The Bagster(s) within 5 business days of you contacting them to schedule pickup.

The Bagster Pricing

First, you have to purchase The Bagster for about $30. Pickup costs vary depending on where you are in the country. We used their online tool to see what pickup costs would be in Bel Air zip 21014 and Baltimore zip 21201. The cost is $211.75 + tax, plus an additional $8 fee if you book online.

They offer a discount on a second or third bag, for $157 if they pick up all the bags at the same time. If you underestimate how much stuff you have, you’ll have to get another Bagster and pay an additional pickup fee.

So for one Bagster:

Baltimore: $30 + $211.75 + $14.82 in tax = $256.57 or $85.52 per cubic yard ($256.57/3)

Bel Air: $30 + $211.75 + $12.70 in tax = $254.45 or $84. 81 per cubic yard ($254.45/3)

And remember to add $8 if you schedule pickup online.

The Fine Print

There are a few additional things you need to know about getting rid of your stuff using The Bagster. Because Waste Management needs to use a crane to pick up the bag, you must place the bag at the end of your driveway. That means you need to haul everything to the curb, which can be a pain if you have a long driveway.

But The Bagster can be a good choice if your items are smaller, lighter in weight, and will all fit in the bag. You may need to break things down to get them to fit.

Now, a Dumpster Rental

You’ve seen a roll-off dumpster before. Roofing companies use them when they’re replacing a roof. Lots of homeowners use them when they’re remodeling or clearing out a house before putting it up for sale. A dumpster rental can be more convenient and more cost-effective if you have large items such as furniture or more stuff than would fit in The Bagster.

Let’s take a look at some specifics and our pricing.

10 Cubic Yard Roll-Off Dumpster Specifications

The 10 cubic yard dumpster is our smallest size. It’s more than 3 times the size of The Bagster.

Measurements: 12’ long x 8’ wide x 3.5’ high

Capacity: 10 cubic yards or 4,000 lbs/2 tons

Delivery: Simply call us to schedule your delivery date. We need 1-2 days of advance notice. We deliver Monday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. We can place the dumpster in your driveway by your garage or in the street, based on your preference and HOA rules.

Pickup: Call us to schedule pickup. You do not need to be home. You can keep the dumpster for up to 10 days at the original price. If you need it longer, let us know, and there will be an additional $20 per day fee.

Dumpster Rental Pricing

No matter where you live in Harford County or Baltimore County, we charge the same flat rate of $375 for your 10 cubic foot dumpster rental. We can’t guarantee the same for The Bagster, since we only tried one zip code for each county. There is no additional charge for asking for a quote online. We do encourage you to call if you want faster service.

Your Price: $375 or $37.50 per cubic yard ($375/10)

So renting a dumpster is far cheaper per cubic yard, allows you to get rid of more stuff, bigger stuff like a couch or other furniture, and we can place it in your driveway closer to your garage or basement exit. And a lot of folks miscalculate just how much debris they will have. With the Bagster, that can cost you another $260 or more. By getting a roll-off dumpster, you pay about $120 more than you would for one Bagster, but you get more than 3 times the capacity.

You do the math and decide what’s best for you.
